Rye Castle Museum (Ypres Tower)
Town museum inside Rye's medieval Ypres Tower above the Gungarden
About Rye Castle Museum (Ypres Tower)
Rye Castle Museum occupies the Ypres Tower, a stone tower built in the thirteenth century as part of the town's defences and later used for many years as a prison. It overlooks the Gungarden on the southern edge of Rye's old town, with views across the River Rother towards Rye Harbour and the marshes beyond. Displays inside cover the history of the town and its links with the Cinque Ports, and visitors can also look round the tower rooms and the former women's prison beside it. The museum opens every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with shorter hours from November to March, and makes an easy stop on a walk around Rye.
